Lake Rausu

Lake Rausu

Lake Rausu (羅臼湖) is located in Shiretoko National Park on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan. It is the largest and deepest lake on the Shiretoko Peninsula, with a depth of approximately 2.5 meters (although this may be a typo, refer to additional information below) and a surface area of about 19 hectares.

The lake is fed by snowmelt and a small stream, and its waters are known for their clarity and blue-green color. Due to frequent fog formation on the lake surface caused by weather and water level fluctuations, Lake Rausu is often referred to as the “phantom lake.”

The lake is surrounded by mountains and forests, making it a popular destination for hiking and nature watching. The area is home to various wildlife species, including brown bears and Yezo deer, so visitors should be aware of their surroundings and take appropriate precautions. The area also boasts a rich variety of alpine plants. The lake supports diverse fish species, such as salmon, trout, and char, attracting anglers from all over.

In the winter, the lake and surrounding areas are covered in snow and ice, creating a beautiful winter landscape. However, the area is closed during this season due to heavy snowfall, and visitors are advised to explore the lake during the designated open season.
