Kitano (北野), also known as Kitano-cho, is a historic district located in the northern part of Kobe, Japan. The area is renowned for its well-preserved Western-style houses, called “Ijinkan” (異人館), which were built by foreign residents of Kobe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries after the port of Kobe was opened to foreign trade.
The houses in Kitano showcase a diverse range of architectural styles, including Victorian, colonial, and Art Deco, reflecting the different nationalities and cultures of the residents who once lived there. Many of these houses have been converted into museums, cafes, and shops, allowing visitors to experience the unique atmosphere of this historic district.
Some of the most famous Ijinkan in Kitano include the Weathercock House (風見鶏の館), Moegi House (萌黄の館), and the Uroko House (うろこの家), each with its own distinct architectural style and history. Visitors can purchase a combination ticket to explore several houses at a discounted price.
In addition to the Western-style houses, Kitano offers beautiful views of the city and the sea from its elevated location on the slopes of Mount Rokko. Visitors can also take a stroll in the nearby Kitano Tenman Shrine (北野天満神社), known for its plum blossoms in spring, or visit the Kobe City Museum (神戸市立博物館), which showcases the history and culture of Kobe.
Kitano is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who are interested in exploring its unique architecture, learning about its history, and enjoying its charming atmosphere.
