Mount Rokko

Mount Rokko (六甲山) is a mountain range located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and is a popular destination for hiking and sightseeing. The highest peak of the range is Mount Rokko Main Peak, which is 931 meters (3,054 feet) tall and offers stunning views of Kobe City, Osaka, and the surrounding area.

The mountain range is home to various attractions, including the Rokko International Musical Box Museum, the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, and the Rokko Garden Terrace, which offers panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond. The mountain also has the Rokko Mountain Pasture, where visitors can interact with sheep, horses, and other animals.

In the winter, the area is a popular destination for skiing and other winter sports. Additionally, Arima Onsen (有馬温泉), one of Japan’s three oldest hot spring resorts, is located within the Rokko mountain range and is easily accessible from Mount Rokko.

One of the most popular ways to explore Mount Rokko is by taking the Rokko Cable Car or the Rokko-Arima Ropeway, which offer scenic rides up the mountain and stop at various attractions along the way. Visitors can also hike along the many trails in the area, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging.

Getting there and around

By Train and Bus

  1. Take the Hankyu or Hanshin Line from Osaka-Umeda Station or Kobe-Sannomiya Station
  2. Get off at Hankyu Rokko Station or Hanshin Mikage Station
  3. Take Kobe City Bus No. 16 to Rokko Cable Shita Station (runs every 5-10 minutes)
  4. Get off at Rokko Cable Shita Station
  5. Ride the Rokko Cable Car (about 10 minutes to the summit)

By Car

  • About 1 hour from Osaka
  • About 40 minutes from central Kobe

Getting Around the Summit

  • Use the Rokko Sanjo Bus to visit major facilities like Rokko Garden Terrace and Rokko Cable Car Sanjo Station
