Ine

Ine

Ine (伊根) is a fishing village located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its traditional fishing culture and unique boat houses, which are called “funaya.”

The funaya are traditional wooden houses that are built over the water, with one side facing the sea and the other side facing the land. They were originally used as both living quarters and boat storage, and many of them are still in use today. The upper level of the funaya is used as a living space, while the lower level is used for boat storage and maintenance.

Ine is also known for its seafood, particularly its ama (female divers) who harvest abalone, sea urchin, and other marine delicacies using traditional diving techniques. The village has a long history of ama diving, and the women who practice this profession are highly respected for their skill and bravery.

In recent years, Ine has become a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to experience its traditional fishing culture and enjoy the fresh seafood. The village also offers scenic views of the Sea of Japan and the surrounding mountains, making it a picturesque destination for travelers seeking a taste of rural Japan.
