Mimurotoji Temple (三室戸寺), also known as the Hydrangea Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is renowned for its stunning floral displays, particularly during the spring and summer seasons when its gardens are awash with cherry blossoms and hydrangeas.
Founded in the 10th century, the temple has been rebuilt several times throughout its history. Its main hall (Hondo), which houses a statue of the temple’s principal deity, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The temple grounds also feature a three-storied pagoda (designated as an Important Cultural Property), a bell tower, and a tea house.
One of the highlights of visiting Mimurotoji Temple is its exquisite garden, particularly captivating during the spring and summer. The garden showcases a large pond, several walking paths, and a diverse array of flowers and plants, most notably the approximately 20,000 hydrangeas of 50 different varieties that bloom in profusion in late spring.
In June, the temple opens its “Ajisai-en” (Hydrangea Garden), where approximately 10,000 hydrangeas burst into color. In July, the “Hasu-en” (Lotus Garden) opens, showcasing approximately 10,000 lotus flowers of 200 varieties. The temple is also known for its beautiful autumn foliage, especially around the main hall.
Mimurotoji Temple is conveniently located a 15-minute walk from Mimurodo Station on the Keihan Uji Line. It is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, drawing particularly large crowds during the cherry blossom and hydrangea seasons. The temple also houses a treasure hall (Homotsu-den) where visitors can view Important Cultural Properties such as Buddhist statues and paintings.
