Ujigami Shrine (宇治上神社) is located in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. It enshrines Uji-no-Wakiiratsuko, Emperor Ojin, and Emperor Nintoku. It is a shiki-uchi-sha (shrine listed in Engi-shiki), and its former shrine status was village shrine. It is paired with the adjacent Uji Shrine.
The main hall of Ujigami Shrine was built around 1060, making it the oldest existing shrine building in Japan. It consists of three halls in the ikkensha-ryu-zukuri style, and features a cypress bark roof.
In 1994, the shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto“.
Ujigami Shrine is believed to have existed since before the Nara period (710-794). In the late Heian period (794-1185), the shrine was revered as the Shinto shrine for Uji Byodoin Temple, and since then, it has been revered by the local residents.
