Toba Aquarium

Toba Aquarium (鳥羽水族館) is a large aquarium located in Toba City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the largest aquariums in Japan, boasting the largest number of species on display in the country, with over 1,200 species of marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, penguins, and various types of fish and coral.

One of the main attractions of Toba Aquarium is its large tank, which houses whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Visitors can watch the whale sharks swim and feed in the tank, which is over 30 meters long and 27 meters wide.

The aquarium also features a wide array of other exhibits, including a jellyfish exhibit, a deep sea exhibit, a sea turtle exhibit, and a recreation of the ancient seas. Visitors can also watch live shows featuring dolphins and sea lions, as well as participate in hands-on activities such as feeding fish and touching sea creatures. Toba Aquarium is also the only aquarium in Japan that houses a dugong.

Getting there

By Train

  • About a 10-minute walk from Toba Station
  • Toba Station is served by both JR and Kintetsu trains
  • From Ise-shi Station: 15 minutes by JR (240 yen) or Kintetsu (390 yen)
  • Direct trains connect Toba with Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto

By Bus

  • The Ise Futami Toba Tour Bus (CAN Bus) stops near the aquarium
  • “Ise-Toba Michikusa Kippu” ticket offers unlimited bus rides and discounts

By Car

Three parking lots available:

  1. On-site parking: 800 yen per day
  2. Multi-story parking lot: 800 yen per day
  3. Toba station parking lot: 500 yen per day

Parking is open from 9:00 to 17:30 (8:30 to 18:00 during summer season)

The aquarium is about a 2-hour drive from Osaka, Kyoto, or Nagoya.
