
Sakurai City (桜井) in Nara Prefecture is located in the eastern part of the Nara Basin. The city has prospered as the “center of Yamato” since ancient times, and numerous ancient burial mounds, temples, shrines, and historical buildings remain. Sake brewing and tea cultivation are also flourishing, and the city is one of Nara’s representative tourist destinations.
Sakurai City is home to many temples and shrines that have been worshipped since ancient times, including Ogami Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, Hase Temple, Abe Monju-in Temple, and Tanzan Shrine.
Sakurai City is blessed with abundant nature. Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall are beautiful, and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling can be enjoyed. Mount Miwa and Mount Amanokaguyama are located in the city, and mountain climbing is popular.
