
Muroji Temple (室生寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Uda City in Nara Prefecture, Japan. The temple is the head temple of the Shingon sect Buzan school and is known for its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and historical significance.
The temple was founded in the 8th century and has a long history of being associated with Shingon Buddhism. Many of the buildings at Muroji Temple were built in the Heian period (794-1185) and are considered important examples of Japanese Buddhist architecture.
One of the most famous parts of Muroji Temple is the five-story pagoda, which stands at approximately 16.2 meters tall and is one of the oldest wooden pagodas in Japan. The temple also has a beautiful garden, which features a pond, waterfalls, and a variety of trees and plants.
Muroji Temple is also known for its autumn foliage, which is said to be one of the most beautiful in Japan. During the autumn months, the trees around the temple turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Getting there
By Train and Bus
- Take the Kintetsu Osaka Line to Muroguchi-Ono Station
- From Muroguchi-Ono Station:
- Take a Nara Kotsu Bus bound for “Muroji”
- Get off at the final stop (Muroji-mae)
- Journey time: About 15 minutes
- Bus fare: 430 yen
- Walk about 5 minutes from the bus stop to the temple entrance
