Tanzan Shrine

Tanzan Shrine

Tanzan Shrine (談山神社) is a Shinto shrine located in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Fujiwara no Kamatari, a prominent statesman and founder of the Fujiwara clan in the Asuka period.

The shrine is famous for its thirteen-story pagoda, which is designated as a National Treasure of Japan. The pagoda is the only wooden thirteen-story pagoda remaining in Japan.

The shrine was founded in the 7th century and is located at the foot of Mount Unebi, surrounded by a beautiful forest. This makes it a popular destination for visitors who want to experience the natural beauty of Nara Prefecture, especially during the autumn season when the foliage is at its peak.

Another notable feature of Tanzan Shrine is its connection to the Jinshin War. The shrine was built at the site of Kamatari’s residence, where he planned a coup that led to the war. The shrine is thus an important historical site that offers insights into Japan’s ancient political landscape.
