Shinsekai (新世界) is a district located in the southern part of Osaka, Japan. The name Shinsekai means “New World” in Japanese, and the district was created in the early 20th century, modeled after Paris and Coney Island, as an entertainment and amusement area. It was designed to be a symbol of progress and modernity, with a mix of western and Japanese architectural styles. However, Shinsekai suffered devastating damage during World War II.
Shinsekai is known for its iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, which was originally built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1956. The tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and is a popular tourist attraction.
The district is also famous for its lively atmosphere and unique food culture. It’s a popular spot to try kushikatsu, which are skewers of deep-fried meat and vegetables. Visitors can explore Janjan Yokocho, a lively shopping street filled with the charm of Osaka, and try their hand at smartball, a retro game popular in the Showa era.
Shinsekai also boasts numerous statues of Billiken, a charm doll believed to grant wishes when you rub the soles of its feet. Other attractions include Tsutenkaku, the symbol of Shinsekai offering a bird’s-eye view of Osaka, and Spa World, a large hot spring complex with baths themed after different countries.
