Otsu

Otsu (大津) is the capital city of Shiga Prefecture, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. It has a population of around 340,000 people and serves as a major transportation hub and cultural center in the region.

Otsu has a long and rich history, dating back to the Yayoi period. It flourished as a political and cultural center during the Asuka and Nara periods, serving as the capital of Japan for a brief time in 667-672. It was also the site of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, a pivotal event that led to the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Today, Otsu is known for its diverse attractions. The city offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural experiences. Some of the most popular sites include the Omi Jingu Shrine (近江神宮), dedicated to Emperor Tenji, who established Otsu as the capital, and the Miidera Temple (三井寺), a vast Buddhist temple complex and a designated National Treasure, renowned for its beautiful buildings and seasonal flowers.

Otsu is also a gateway to outdoor activities, with opportunities for hiking, cycling, and water sports on Lake Biwa. The city’s location on the lakeshore provides easy access to various recreational activities, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.

The city boasts a vibrant culinary scene, with many local specialties such as Omi beef (近江牛), a premium brand of Wagyu beef known for its tenderness and marbling, and funazushi (鮒寿司), a unique fermented sushi made from nigorobuna, a type of crucian carp found in Lake Biwa.
