The Boso Peninsula (房総半島) is a scenic peninsula located in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The peninsula is divided into three main areas: Uchibo (inner side), Sotobo (outer side), and Minamiboso (southern part). Each area offers its own unique attractions, including beautiful beaches, traditional fishing villages, and historic landmarks.
One of the most popular attractions in Boso Peninsula is Kujukuri Beach (九十九里浜), a long and wide sandy beach stretching over 60 kilometers along the Pacific coast. It is a popular destination for swimming, surfing, and other water sports.
Another popular attraction is Mount Nokogiri (鋸山), home to the Nihon-ji Temple (日本寺). The temple is famous for its giant stone-carved Buddha statue, the largest in Japan, as well as other impressive stone carvings and a scenic hiking trail offering panoramic views of Tokyo Bay. The mountain is also known for its former quarry, which supplied stone for the construction of Edo Castle.
Other popular attractions in the Boso Peninsula include the Inubosaki Lighthouse (犬吠埼灯台), the easternmost point of the peninsula and a prime spot to watch the first sunrise in Japan, and the Sawara district (佐原), a well-preserved historic town designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, known for its traditional Japanese architecture and canal system.
The Boso Peninsula offers a diverse range of attractions for visitors to enjoy, from stunning natural landscapes to historical and cultural sites. With its convenient access from Tokyo, it’s a perfect destination for a day trip or a longer vacation.
