Mount Nokogiriyama

Mount Nokogiriyama

Nokogiriyama (鋸山), also known as Mount Nokogiri, is a mountain located in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The mountain is known for its stunning views of Tokyo Bay and a variety of historic and natural attractions.

One of the main attractions at Nokogiriyama is the sprawling Nihon-ji temple complex (日本寺), which encompasses the entire mountain. It features a variety of historic structures and landmarks, including the impressive Hyakushaku Kannon, a large Buddha statue carved into the rock face of the mountain, a pagoda, a gate, various halls, and shrines.

In addition to the temple complex, Nokogiriyama offers a range of hiking trails with panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and the surrounding countryside. The trails lead to several natural and cultural landmarks, including the Jigoku-nozoki viewpoint (地獄覗き), a thrilling spot that offers a view of a sheer cliff face seemingly dropping straight down into the valley below, and the Sengenbyo-do hall (千五百羅漢), which houses 1,500 unique stone statues of Buddhist disciples with various expressions.

Other attractions at Nokogiriyama include the Mount Nokogiri Ropeway (鋸山ロープウェー) that takes visitors to the mountaintop, offering spectacular views during the ride, and a quarry that was once used to extract stone for the construction of Tokyo’s Edo Castle. Visitors can also find various restaurants and souvenir shops at the base of the mountain and near the temple complex.
