Yubatake (湯畑), meaning “hot water field,” is a famous landmark and the primary source of hot spring water in Kusatsu Onsen, a renowned hot spring resort town in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. This large open-air hot spring source boasts Japan’s highest natural flow rate, gushing out approximately 32,300 liters of hot water per minute.
The Yubatake collects water from several sources and channels it into a large wooden structure. The water, rich in minerals like sulfur, is known for its therapeutic properties and distinctive milky white color due to its high temperature, strong acidity, and high sulfur concentration. The water is then cooled down as it flows over several wooden planks, creating a soothing sound. These planks, known as yudoi (湯樋), not only regulate the water temperature but also collect yunohana (湯の花), mineral deposits from the hot spring water, used for bath salts and medicinal purposes.
Visitors can stroll around the wooden structure, observing the hot spring water up close, and relax in the several footbaths available, while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
During the winter months, the Yubatake is illuminated at night, creating a magical ambiance. The area surrounding Yubatake is a bustling hub for tourists, filled with hotels, ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), souvenir shops, and restaurants. The Yubatake also serves as a venue for various events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Kusatsu Onsen Festival, which takes place in August.
