Mount Tanigawa

Mount Tanigawa (谷川岳) is a mountain located on the border of Gunma and Niigata Prefectures in Japan. The mountain has two main peaks, both on the Niigata side: the highest peak, Tomano-mimi (1963m), and the slightly lower Oki-no-mimi (1977m). On the Gunma side, there are other notable peaks like Ichinokura-dake (1974m) and Shigekura-dake (1978m).

In Gunma Prefecture, Mount Tanigawa is a popular destination for hiking and climbing. The Tanigawadake Ropeway provides access from the Gunma side, taking visitors to Tenjin-toge Station at a high elevation, where various hiking trails begin.

One popular hiking trail on the Gunma side is the Tenjin Ridge Trail (天神尾根), which offers relatively easier access compared to the challenging Nishikuro Ridge Trail (西黒尾根) with its rocky terrain. Both trails offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

During winter, Mount Tanigawa transforms into a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. Tanigawadake Tenjindaira Ski Resort is one of the popular ski resorts in the area, catering to skiers and snowboarders of all levels. In the green season, the resort operates the ropeway, allowing visitors to enjoy hiking and admire alpine plants.

Getting there

By Train and Bus

From Tokyo Station:

1. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station (70 minutes)
2. Transfer to a Minakami Line bus bound for Tanigawadake Ropeway Station (45 minutes)

• Total journey time: About 2 hours

Alternatively:

1. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station
2. Transfer to a local train to Doai Station (8 minutes)
3. Walk 20-30 minutes uphill to the ropeway station

By Car

• About 3 hours drive from Tokyo
• Parking available at the ropeway station (500 yen fee)
