Pampas Grass Field

Pampas Grass Field

The Pampas Grass Field (仙石原すすき草原), located in Sengokuhara, a district of Hakone town in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is a breathtaking natural attraction. The field derives its name from the tall, fluffy susuki grass (pampas grass) that covers the landscape.

The Pampas Grass Field is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hakone, particularly during autumn when the susuki grass transforms into a shimmering golden brown, complementing the vibrant fall foliage of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can stroll through the field along a designated path, immersing themselves in the picturesque scenery.

Beyond the susuki grass, the field supports diverse plant and animal life, including wildflowers, butterflies, and birds. Nestled amidst forests and mountains, the field offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for nature lovers and hikers.

The field is open year-round, but the peak season is autumn when the susuki grass is at its most majestic. Additionally, the annual controlled burn of the field in mid-to-late March provides a unique spectacle as the entire area is engulfed in flames, contributing to the preservation of the landscape.

The Pampas Grass Field is easily accessible by public transportation, with buses and trains regularly operating from Tokyo and other major cities. Visitors should get off at the “Sengoku Kogen” bus stop on the Hakone Tozan Bus line.

While there’s no dedicated parking for the field, the nearby Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands offers parking, though it can get crowded during peak season, making public transportation a more convenient option. The field is located at the base of Mount Kintoki (金時山), renowned for its association with the folk hero Kintaro. Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding Hakone mountains from the summit.
