Nikko Futarasan Shrine

Nikko Futarasan Shrine

Nikko Futarasan Shrine (日光二荒山神社) is a historic Shinto shrine located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the most important and revered shrines in Japan, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, forming part of the “Shrines and Temples of Nikko.”

The shrine is dedicated to the three deities of Nikko’s mountain worship: Okuninushi no Mikoto (大己貴命), the god of Mount Nantai, Tagorihime no Mikoto (田心姫命), the goddess of Mount Nyoho, and Ajisukitakahikone no Mikoto (味耜高彦根命), the god of Mount Taro. These deities have been worshiped since ancient times as the creators of the world and the Japanese islands, and are also associated with good fortune and protection.

Futarasan Shrine has a long history, dating back to the 8th century. It was originally built in the Nara period, and has since been rebuilt several times. The current main shrine buildings date back to the 17th century and are considered a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture.

The shrine is known for its beautiful and intricate carvings and decorations, such as dragons, lions, and other mythical creatures. The surrounding gardens and forests are also well-maintained, and offer a peaceful and tranquil setting for visitors to enjoy. Within the shrine grounds, visitors can also find the sacred “Meoto Sugi” (夫婦杉), a pair of cedar trees over 800 years old, believed to bring good fortune in marriage and relationships.

Futarasan Shrine comprises three shrines: Hongu (main shrine) located next to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Chugushi (middle shrine) located on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, and Takio Shrine (upper shrine) located on the mountainside.

Futarasan Shrine is particularly famous for its annual festival, held in early April. The festival features traditional music, dancing, and parades, and is a highlight of the year for locals and visitors alike.
