Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) is a scenic spot located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, known for its natural beauty and mysterious atmosphere. The abyss is a narrow gorge carved by the Daiya River, with towering cliffs and lush greenery on either side. Visitors can follow a walking path that winds along the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
One of the most notable features of Kanmangafuchi Abyss is the row of around 100 stone Jizo statues (actually, there are said to be even more) lining the path. These statues, placed for memorial purposes, are believed to protect travelers and children. They create a unique and spiritual ambiance, especially when illuminated at night. The area where the statues stand is called “Sai no Kawara” (賽の河原), a place in Buddhist belief where children who died before their parents are said to build stone towers in the afterlife.
The “Muen Bridge” (無縁橋) spans the abyss. It’s said that crossing this bridge can grant wishes.
In addition to its natural beauty and cultural significance, Kanmangafuchi Abyss is a popular spot for hiking and leisurely walks. The surrounding area offers various hiking trails and scenic viewpoints, making it a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
