Taiyuin (大猷院) is a Buddhist temple located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the many temples and shrines in Nikko that make up a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Taiyuin was built in the 17th century as the mausoleum for the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu. It is known for its beautiful and intricate architecture, which combines elements of Japanese and Chinese design.
The temple grounds include several buildings and structures, including a main hall (honden), a pagoda, and gates. The haiden (拝殿), or worship hall, is particularly impressive, with its ornate carvings and decorations.
One of the highlights of Taiyuin is the Yashamon Gate (夜叉門), which is considered one of the most beautiful gates in Japan. It is covered in colorful carvings and decorations, and is a popular spot for photos. Other notable gates include Nitenmon Gate and the National Treasure Karamon Gate.
Visitors to Taiyuin can also explore the temple’s beautiful gardens, which include ponds, waterfalls, and cherry blossom trees. The gardens are especially beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The temple also houses several National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including five structures designated as National Treasures and 15 as Important Cultural Properties.
