Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park

The Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park (日光田母沢御用邸記念公園) is a historical attraction located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The villa, designed by the renowned architect Katayama Tokuma, was constructed during the Meiji period (1868-1912) in a unique blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles, popular during that era.

Now open to the public as a museum, visitors can explore the various rooms and hallways of the two-story wooden villa, filled with antique furnishings, artwork, and other artifacts that offer a glimpse into the lives of the imperial family during the Meiji period.

One of the highlights of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa is its beautiful Japanese garden. Designed in the “Chisen-kaiyu” (pond-circuit) style, the garden features a large pond, waterfalls, and meticulously crafted landscapes showcasing seasonal flowers and trees, particularly stunning during the autumn foliage.

The villa served as a summer retreat for the imperial family in the early 20th century, and visitors can see various rooms and artifacts related to their visits, such as furniture, artwork, and photographs, providing insights into their lives.

The Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park is easily accessible by bus from Tobu Nikko Station (approximately 10 minutes) or JR Nikko Station (approximately 15 minutes). From JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station:

• Take a Tobu bus bound for Yumoto Onsen, Chuzenji Onsen, Okuhosoo, or Kiyotaki
• Get off at Tamozawa bus stop
