Okunikko (奥日光) is a scenic area located within Nikko National Park in Japan, encompassing the natural wonders of Senjogahara Marshland, Lake Chuzenji, Lake Yunoko, Yudaki Falls, and more. It is a mountainous region renowned for its beautiful landscapes, including waterfalls, hot springs, lakes, and forests. The area is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and various outdoor activities.
One of the most popular attractions in Okunikko is Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖), formed over 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. Surrounded by mountains, the lake offers stunning views and opportunities for boat rides and lakeside hikes to waterfalls and other scenic spots. The lakeshore is also home to the Chuzenji Onsen hot spring resort, where visitors can enjoy therapeutic hot springs and the beautiful natural surroundings.
Another must-see attraction in Okunikko is Kegon Falls (華厳の滝), one of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls. The waterfall plunges 97 meters into a deep gorge and is particularly magnificent in autumn when the surrounding leaves change color.
Yudaki Falls (湯滝) is another notable waterfall in Okunikko, a powerful 70-meter tall waterfall on the Yukawa River, the sole outlet of Lake Yunoko.
Okunikko’s allure extends beyond its scenic lakes and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the vast Senjogahara Marshland (戦場ヶ原) through well-maintained trails, observing diverse plant and bird species. The area transforms into a vibrant spectacle of autumn colors during fall, making it a popular destination for foliage viewing.
