Kegon Falls (華厳の滝) is a magnificent waterfall located in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the three famous waterfalls in Nikko, alongside Ryuzu Falls and Kirifuri Falls.
The Kegon Falls, fed by the waters of Lake Chuzenji, is a breathtaking sight as it cascades 97 meters (318 feet) into a deep gorge. The main falls is actually comprised of twelve smaller waterfalls that flow from the rock face on either side. Visitors can admire this natural wonder from a platform at the bottom or from an observation deck at the top, accessible via a paid elevator that descends 100 meters into the gorge.
The falls are particularly stunning in autumn, when the surrounding forest transforms into a vibrant tapestry of fall foliage. During winter, the waterfall often freezes, creating an ice pillar that draws visitors to witness its unique beauty.
The area around Kegon Falls offers excellent hiking opportunities. Various trails wind through the surrounding forest, providing picturesque views of the falls and the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic boat ride on Lake Chuzenji or take the Akechidaira Ropeway to the Akechidaira Observation Deck for a panoramic view of Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and Mount Nantai.
