Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖) is a scenic lake located in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Formed over 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption damming the river, the lake is a popular destination for visitors who enjoy its natural beauty and outdoor activities.
Surrounded by mountains and forests, Lake Chuzenji offers opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring nature. One popular activity is taking a boat ride from the Chuzenji Onsen Boat Dock, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also hike along the lakeside trails, discovering waterfalls and scenic spots.
The lakeside is home to the Chuzenji Onsen hot spring resort, where visitors can stay in traditional Japanese inns or modern hotels and enjoy the therapeutic waters while admiring the lake views.
On the northern shore of the lake, Mount Nantai (男体山) rises 2,486 meters above sea level, providing stunning views of Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding mountains from its summit. The famous Kegon Falls (華厳の滝), one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls, is located where the Daiya River flows out of Lake Chuzenji.
The Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park and the British Embassy Villa Memorial Park, situated on the lakeshore, offer glimpses into the history and architecture of the area.
During autumn, the foliage surrounding Lake Chuzenji transforms into vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow, attracting visitors to experience the breathtaking fall colors. The nearby Senjogahara Marshland, formed by the Yukawa River flowing from Lake Chuzenji, is also a popular hiking destination.
