Ryuzu Waterfall (竜頭滝), meaning “dragon head waterfall” in Japanese, is a picturesque waterfall located in Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The name derives from the two streams of water cascading down the rocks, resembling the head of a dragon. The waterfall is divided into two by a large rock in the middle, creating the appearance of a dragon’s head.
Situated on the Yukawa River, which connects Lake Chuzenji and Lake Yunoko, Ryuzu Waterfall drops approximately 210 meters down a steep cliff face in several tiers. The water’s deep blue-green hue is attributed to the high concentration of minerals carried down from the surrounding volcanic mountains. Visitors can marvel at the 60-meter wide waterfall from a platform at its base, accessible by a short walk from the parking lot. The platform also has a tea house where visitors can rest and enjoy the view.
Ryuzu Waterfall is particularly captivating in the autumn, when the surrounding foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. However, the area is also renowned for its stunning display of red-purple azaleas from May to June.
The waterfall is easily accessible by bus from Nikko Station, taking approximately one hour. Visitors can get off at the “Ryuzu no Taki” bus stop, which is just a short walk from the waterfall.
