Kanzeonji Temple

Kanzeonji Temple (観世音寺) is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Founded in the 8th century, it is one of the oldest temples in Kyushu.

The temple is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kannon (also known as Kanzeon or Avalokitesvara), who is considered the embodiment of compassion in Mahayana Buddhism. The main hall of the temple houses a statue of Kannon that is estimated to have been created during the Asuka period (around 1300 years ago).

Kanzeonji Temple is also known for its beautiful gardens and architecture. The temple grounds include several gardens, such as a large pond garden and a moss garden, designed to represent the natural beauty of Kyushu. The temple’s main gate, known as the Niomon Gate, is also an impressive structure, with intricate carvings and a large stone statue of Kannon.

The temple has played an important role in the history of Kyushu and Japan. It was originally built as a place of worship for the emperor’s family and later became a center for Buddhist scholarship and practice. While the temple itself was not the site of the 16th-century battle between the forces of Oda Nobunaga and the Mori clan, the nearby Dazaifu government office ruins were.

The temple hosts several festivals throughout the year, including a cherry blossom festival in the spring and a chrysanthemum festival in the fall. Visitors can also participate in meditation sessions and other Buddhist practices at the temple.

By Train

From Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station:

• Take the Nishitetsu Omuta Line to Gojo Station (35 minutes)
• Walk 15 minutes from Gojo Station to the temple

From Dazaifu Station:

• Walk 20 minutes to the temple

By Bus

From Dazaifu Station or Gojo Station:

• Take a bus bound for Kanzeonji-mae
• Get off at Kanzeonji-mae bus stop (5 minutes, 100 yen)
• Buses run three times per hour

By Car

• About 15 minutes from the Dazaifu Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway
