Kokura Castle (小倉城) is a historical castle located in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The castle was built in 1602 by Hosokawa Tadaoki, a powerful feudal lord who played a significant role in the unification of Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868).
Kokura Castle is known for its unique architecture, which combines traditional Japanese castle design with Western-style features. The castle has several buildings and structures, including the main tower, which is five stories tall and has a distinctive red roof. The castle grounds also include a beautiful garden that offers cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, as well as several historical artifacts, including weapons, armor, and artwork from the Edo period.
The original castle tower was destroyed by fire during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. However, it was reconstructed in 1959 and is now open to the public as a museum. The museum features exhibits on the history and culture of the Kitakyushu region, as well as displays of the castle’s historical artifacts.
Kokura Castle is also a popular destination for cherry blossom viewing in the spring and autumn leaves viewing in the fall. Additionally, it is a popular spot for various traditional Japanese cultural events throughout the year, such as Kokura Gion Daiko (drum festival) and Kokura Castle Bamboo Light Festival.
