Sofukuji Temple (崇福寺) is a historic Zen Buddhist temple located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is considered one of the city’s important cultural and historical landmarks. The temple was originally established in 1240 as Shofuku-ji during the Kamakura period in Dazaifu and was later relocated to its current location in 1600, following the construction of Fukuoka Castle. It was then renamed Sofuku-ji and served as the family temple of the Kuroda clan, the feudal lords of the Fukuoka Domain.
Sofukuji is renowned for its Zen architectural style, featuring a Sanmon (main gate) and a Butsuden (main hall). The temple complex also includes a Karesansui (dry landscape) garden, which provides a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
Inside the temple, visitors can see the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the principal object of worship. The temple also houses several other important cultural properties.
Throughout the year, Sofukuji hosts various events and ceremonies, including Buddhist rituals and cultural festivals. These events offer visitors a chance to engage with the temple’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
