Mangrove Forest

Mangrove Forest

There is a mangrove forest located in the strait between Amami Oshima and Kakeromajima islands, both part of the Amami archipelago. The mangrove forest is situated in the southeastern part of Amami Oshima, near the town of Kasari, and covers an area of approximately 2.5 square kilometers.

The mangrove forest in the Amami Islands is considered the second largest in Japan, after Iriomote Island in Okinawa, and is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including a number of endangered species. Visitors can explore the mangrove forest by canoe, a popular activity in the area known as mangrove canoeing.

During a mangrove canoe tour, visitors can observe the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest, which is a complex network of interwoven trees and roots that help to stabilize the shoreline and provide important habitats for a variety of species. The tours are usually led by knowledgeable guides who can provide information about the mangrove forest’s ecology and history, as well as point out some of the unique species that inhabit the area.
