Ebino Kogen

Ebino Kogen

Ebino Kogen (えびの高原) is a highland area located in the Kirishima mountain range in southern Kyushu, Japan. The area is known for its scenic beauty, hot springs, and hiking trails.

One of the most popular hiking trails in Ebino Kogen is the Karakunidake Trail. This trail leads hikers to the summit of Mount Karakunidake, which is the highest peak in the Kirishima mountain range at an altitude of 1,700 meters. The round-trip trail is about 5.2 kilometers long and takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete, depending on the hiker’s pace.

The trail starts from the Ebino Kogen Sulfuric Mountain trailhead, where there is limited parking available. The trail is well-marked and maintained, but it can be steep and rocky in some sections, so hikers need to be in good physical condition and wear sturdy hiking boots.

Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as the unique volcanic landscape of Kirishima. The trail also passes through a beautiful forest of Japanese cedars and other native trees, which provide shade and cool relief from the summer heat.

At the summit of Mount Karakunidake, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Kirishima mountain range and the surrounding landscape, including Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima.
