Kirishima Shrine

Kirishima Shrine (霧島神宮), located in Kirishima-Taguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, in southern Japan, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, and his wife Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of flowers and cherry blossoms.

The history of Kirishima Shrine dates back more than 1,300 years, and the shrine has been an important religious site for the people of southern Japan throughout its history. The shrine is located at the base of the Kirishima Mountains, which are considered sacred in Shinto belief.

Kirishima Shrine is known for its beautiful grounds, which are surrounded by ancient trees and feature several impressive torii gates and other traditional Shinto architecture. The main hall of the shrine, known as the Honden, was rebuilt in 1715 by Shimazu Yoshiki, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The shrine is also known for its annual Grand Festival, which takes place on November 3rd and features traditional music, dance, and other performances. The festival is one of the largest and most important in the region and draws visitors from across Japan and around the world.

From Miyazaki:

1. Take a train to Kirishima Jingu Station (80-150 minutes)
2. Transfer to a local bus to Kirishima Shrine (10 minutes)
