Satsuma Peninsula

Satsuma Peninsula

The Satsuma Peninsula (薩摩半島) is a long, narrow peninsula located in Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern tip of Kyushu Island in Japan. It is named after the former Satsuma Domain, which encompassed much of the area during the feudal era.

The Satsuma Peninsula is known for its natural beauty, with rugged coastlines, mountains like the iconic Mount Kaimon, and hot springs. Visitors can enjoy hiking, beachcombing, and soaking in the region’s many onsen (hot springs).

One of the most popular destinations on the peninsula is the town of Ibusuki, which is famous for its sand baths. Visitors can bury themselves in warm, volcanic sand and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the minerals and heat.

Another popular destination is the town of Chiran, which is known for its preserved samurai houses and beautiful gardens. Visitors can tour the homes of former samurai and explore the meticulously maintained gardens. The peninsula is also home to several sites related to Saigo Takamori, a prominent samurai and politician from the Satsuma Domain.

The Satsuma Peninsula is also home to numerous agricultural products, including sweet potatoes, mandarin oranges, and green tea. The region is also known for its fresh seafood, such as bonito and yellowtail. Visitors can sample these local specialties at farmers markets and in local restaurants.
