
The Chiran Samurai District (知覧武家屋敷庭園群) is a historic district located in the town of Chiran, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is renowned for its well-preserved samurai residences and gardens, which date back to the Edo period (1603-1868). The district is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
The district comprises around 60 traditional samurai homes, many of which are open to the public. Visitors can explore the homes and gardens, which are adorned with traditional architecture, artwork, and landscaping. Some of the homes also feature displays of samurai armor, weapons, and other historical artifacts.
The Chiran Samurai District is located near the Chiran Tokko Peace Museum, which is dedicated to the kamikaze pilots of World War II. Visitors to the district can also explore nearby temples and shrines, including the Chiran Shrine and the Komyo-ji Temple.

By Bus
From Kagoshima Chuo Station:
- Travel time: about 75 minutes
- Fare: 990 yen
- Frequency: every 1-2 hours
- Get off at “Bukeyashiki-iriguchi” (Samurai Residences Entrance) bus stop
By Train and Bus Combination
- Take the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line from Kagoshima Chuo Station to Hirakawa Station (about 36 minutes)
- Then take a bus from Hirakawa Station to Chiran (about 32 minutes)
By Car
