Jomonsugi

Jomonsugi

Jomon Sugi (縄文杉) is a large, ancient cedar tree located on the island of Yakushima, which is part of Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. This tree is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old, making it one of the oldest trees in the world.

The cedar tree stands at 25.3 meters tall and has a girth of 16.4 meters, making it one of the largest trees in Japan. The tree is named after the Jomon period of Japanese history, which lasted from around 14,000 BCE to 300 BCE.

Visitors can hike to Jomon Sugi via several trails that wind through the island’s mountainous terrain. The most popular trail starts from the Arakawa Trailhead and takes hikers through the ancient forest and past other notable cedar trees. The hike to Jomon Sugi is long and challenging, taking around 10 hours round-trip, so visitors are advised to be in good physical condition and bring plenty of water and snacks.

Jomon Sugi is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yakushima and is a sacred and protected natural monument. Visitors are not allowed to touch or climb the tree. A boardwalk has been built around the tree to protect its delicate root system, and visitors are required to stay on the path.

Despite the challenging hike, the chance to see one of the world’s oldest and largest trees in person is a truly unforgettable experience and a testament to the enduring beauty and resilience of nature.
