Shiratani Unsuikyo

Shiratani Unsuikyo

Shiratani Unsuikyo (白谷雲水峡) is a scenic hiking trail located in Yakushima, an island south of Kyushu in Japan. The trail is renowned for its lush, ancient forest, which is said to have served as the inspiration for the magical forests depicted in the animated movie “Princess Mononoke” by Studio Ghibli.

The round-trip hiking trail is approximately 6 kilometers long and takes visitors through a variety of natural wonders, including towering Yakusugi cedar trees (some of which are over 1,000 years old), moss-covered boulders, and crystal-clear streams. The forest is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life, including several species of birds, mammals, and insects.

One of the highlights of the Shiratani Unsuikyo trail is the Taiko Iwa, a massive rock formation that resembles a traditional Japanese taiko drum. Another notable feature of the trail is the Yayoi Sugi, a 3,000-year-old cedar tree that is one of the oldest living trees in Japan.

While the trail is relatively easy and can be completed in 4-5 hours round-trip, visitors are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks. The park also offers several guided tours, which provide a more in-depth look at the flora and fauna of the forest.
