Mount Aso (阿蘇山), located in Aso Kuju National Park in Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures on the island of Kyushu in Japan, is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world and boasts one of the largest calderas on Earth, measuring approximately 25 kilometers in diameter.
Mount Aso is not a single mountain but a group of five peaks known as Aso Gogaku (阿蘇五岳). The highest peak is Takadake, standing at 1,592 meters above sea level. Mount Aso has been active for over 270,000 years and has erupted several times throughout history, with a significant eruption occurring in 2016. The Nakadake crater is still active, and access to the crater may be restricted depending on volcanic activity. If you visit the crater, be aware of volcanic gas, especially when the wind is blowing towards you.
Despite its active status, Mount Aso is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to see the stunning natural beauty of the caldera and surrounding landscape. Within the caldera, there are many villages where people live and work, showcasing a unique coexistence with the volcano.
There are several hiking trails in the area, which offer spectacular views of the volcano and its surroundings. Kusasenri, a vast grassland at the foot of Mount Eboshi, is a popular spot for horseback riding and leisurely walks.
Visitors can access the Mount Aso crater area by car, bus, or ropeway. The Aso Volcano Museum, located at the top, provides information about the volcano’s history and geology, including live camera footage of the Nakadake crater.
One of the most popular activities at Mount Aso is horseback riding through the caldera. Several stables in the area offer guided tours, providing visitors with a unique perspective on the volcano and its surroundings.
