Amano Iwato Shrine (天岩戸神社) is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Takachiho in the Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan. It is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, who is considered the ancestral deity of the Japanese imperial family.
The shrine is located a short distance away from the Takachiho Gorge and is built near a cave called Amano Iwato, which is said to be the place where the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself away after an argument with her brother, the storm god Susanoo.
According to legend, Susanoo had been causing trouble and destruction, and Amaterasu was so angry with him that she retreated into the cave and refused to come out, plunging the world into darkness. The other gods tried everything they could think of to lure her out, but nothing worked until the goddess Ame-no-Uzume performed a dance and comedy routine that made the other gods laugh so hard that Amaterasu came out to see what was going on.
The actual cave where Amaterasu is said to have hidden is a sacred site inaccessible to the public. However, visitors can still pay their respects to Amaterasu at the shrine and explore the surrounding area, known for its beautiful natural scenery, including hiking trails and waterfalls.
One of the most popular events at Amano Iwato Shrine is the Amano Iwato Kagura festival, which takes place in November and includes traditional music and dance performances. The festival is a celebration of the legend of Amaterasu and is a great way to experience the rich culture and history of Japan.
