Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡) is a natural wonder located in the town of Takachiho in the Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan. Designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument, it was formed by the Gokase River cutting through the volcanic rocks of the region, creating a narrow, V-shaped canyon that stretches for over 7 kilometers.

The gorge is known for its stunning beauty, with sheer cliffs rising up to 100 meters on either side of the river. The water is crystal clear, and visitors can see schools of fish swimming below the surface. The area is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves of the surrounding trees turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow.

One of the most popular activities at Takachiho Gorge is taking a boat ride along the river. Visitors can rent a traditional wooden rowboat and explore the gorge at their own pace, taking in the stunning scenery from the water.

Another popular activity is hiking along the gorge’s walking trails. There is a trail that runs along the top of the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the canyon from above, and another trail that follows the river at the bottom of the gorge, providing a closer look at the rock formations and waterfalls. The trails are easy to navigate and take about an hour to complete, but visitors can take their time and enjoy the scenery.

Nearby, visitors can also visit the Takachiho Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to various gods featured in Japanese mythology. The shrine is surrounded by beautiful gardens and forested hills.
