Udo Shrine (鵜戸神宮) is a Shinto shrine located on the eastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, unique architecture, and its association with the Shinto deity, Ugayafukiaezu.
The shrine is built into a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean, and its unique architecture is designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Visitors must first climb a long staircase that winds up the cliff face to reach the shrine’s main gate, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Inside the shrine, visitors can see a natural cave known as the “Onuiwa” (Nursing Rock), which is believed to be the spot where Ugayafukiaezu was born. The cave is decorated with colorful Shinto ornaments and is considered to be a sacred site.
One of the most popular attractions at Udo Shrine is the custom of throwing ungyoku (clay balls) into a hollow on the Kameishi (Turtle Stone), a rock formation in the sea below the shrine. This practice is believed to bring good luck and grant wishes.
Udo Shrine is also known for its annual festival, held on February 21st, which features a procession of portable shrines and traditional dances performed by local residents. There is also a unique event called Hadaka Mairi (Naked Procession) held on January 11th.
