Hirado

Hirado (平戸) is a city located on the western coast of Kyushu island, in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It is situated on the Hirado Peninsula and is known for its beautiful natural scenery, rich history, and cultural significance.

Hirado was an important trading port during the Edo period (1603-1868) and played a significant role in Japan’s relations with the outside world. The city was one of the few ports open to foreign trade during the period of national isolation, and was an important center for the Dutch East India Company and Chinese traders. The restored Hirado Dutch Trading Post offers a glimpse into this history, with exhibits showcasing the city’s past as a trading hub.

Today, Hirado is a popular tourist destination due to its well-preserved historical sites and natural attractions. Visitors can explore the city’s many temples and shrines, including the Hirado Castle, which was built in the 16th century and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Saikyoji Temple, with its five-storied pagoda designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the Kameoka Shrine located within its grounds, are also worth visiting. The Hirado Xavier Memorial Church, designed by Tetsukawa Yosuke, is another Important Cultural Property and a must-see for its unique architecture.

Hirado is also known for its beautiful natural scenery. The city is surrounded by mountains and offers stunning views of the sea and coastline. Visitors can enjoy hiking, cycling, and water sports, such as kayaking and fishing, in the surrounding area. The Hirado Bridge, a 665-meter long bridge connecting Hirado Island to the mainland, is a symbol of the city. Ikitsuki Island, located beyond the Hirado Bridge, is known for its beautiful cliffs, sea caves, and unique geological formations.

In addition to its cultural and historical significance, Hirado is also home to the Goto Islands, known for their beautiful beaches and traditional fishing villages.
