Nagasaki Peace Park

Nagasaki Peace Park

Nagasaki Peace Park (長崎平和公園) is a public park located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, that serves as a symbol of peace and a reminder of the devastating impact of nuclear war. The park was built in memory of the victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, and is dedicated to promoting peace and nuclear disarmament.

The centerpiece of the park is the Peace Statue, a large bronze statue of a man with his right arm pointing to the sky and his left hand extended in a gesture of peace. The statue was created by sculptor Seibo Kitamura and was unveiled in 1955.

The park also features a number of other memorials and monuments, including the Fountain of Peace, a symbol of hope and rebirth gifted by Nagasaki’s sister city, San Antonio, and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, which houses a collection of artifacts and documents related to the bombing. The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, located next to the park, also provides exhibits that convey the horrors of the atomic bombing and the importance of peace.

Every year on August 9, the anniversary of the bombing, a peace ceremony is held in the park to honor the victims and promote peace and nuclear disarmament. The ceremony includes speeches, music, and the laying of wreaths at the Peace Statue.

Nagasaki Peace Park is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of nuclear war and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. The park is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Nagasaki and is a symbol of hope and a call to action for a peaceful and just world.
