Beppu (別府) is a city located in the Oita Prefecture of Kyushu, Japan, and is renowned as one of the largest hot spring destinations in Japan, boasting the highest number of sources and the largest volume of hot spring water in the country.
The city is home to eight distinct hot spring areas, known as the “Beppu Hatto” (別府八湯), each offering unique water qualities and characteristics. Among the popular hot springs in Beppu are the “Hells of Beppu” (別府地獄めぐり), a group of seven visually stunning hot springs that are too hot for bathing but can be admired from a safe distance.
Apart from the hot springs, Beppu offers various other attractions, including the 90-meter tall Beppu Tower with observation decks providing panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. Visitors can also explore numerous museums, parks, and temples, such as the Beppu City Art Museum, Takegawara Onsen, Oita Fragrance Museum, Umi Jigoku, and Chinoike Jigoku.
Beppu is also known for its diverse cuisine, featuring fresh seafood like “Seki Aji” and “Seki Saba,” as well as the unique local specialty “Jigoku Mushi” (hell-steamed dishes). Visitors can indulge in these culinary delights at the many restaurants and food stalls throughout the city.
