Jigoku (Hells)

Jigoku

Jigoku Meguri (地獄めぐり) in Beppu refers to a popular tourist attraction that allows visitors to tour the “hells” (Jigoku) of Beppu. Beppu is a city in Oita Prefecture, Japan, that is famous for its numerous hot springs, and Jigoku Meguri provides a way for visitors to experience the unique characteristics of each of the seven “hells” up close. The eighth “hell,” Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell), is located a bit further away and requires a separate admission fee.

There are seven “hells” included in the standard Jigoku Meguri tour, each with its own unique features, such as boiling mud pools, red-colored hot springs, and geysers that shoot water high into the air. Visitors can purchase individual tickets for each “hell” or a combination ticket that allows them to visit all seven. The tour provides an opportunity to learn about the history, geology, and cultural significance of the hot springs.

Jigoku Meguri is a popular tourist attraction in Beppu, and it is often combined with other activities in the area, such as onsen (hot spring) visits, foot baths, hand baths, and steam cooking experiences.
