Kuju Mountains

The Kuju Mountains (九重連山) are a mountain range located in Oita Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, Japan. The range is part of the Aso-Kuju National Park, which covers a total area of approximately 700 square kilometers. The Kuju Mountains are known for their scenic beauty and are a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and skiing.

The highest peak in the Kuju Mountains is Mount Kuju, which stands at an elevation of 1,791 meters. The mountain is a popular destination for hikers and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Other popular peaks in the range include Mount Nakadake, which is known for its hot springs and volcanic activity, and Mount Taisen, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Kuju Mountains are also known for their cultural significance. The area is home to several shrines and temples, including the Kuju Kogen Shrine, which is dedicated to the mountain gods. The mountains also feature Kuju Flower Park, famous for its seasonal blooms, particularly the breathtaking Miyama Kirishima azaleas in May and June.

The Kuju Mountains offer various hot spring resorts such as Chojabaru Onsen, Sujiyu Onsen, and Uenokuchi Onsen, providing visitors with opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation after enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, the area boasts two Ramsar Convention wetlands, Tadewara Marsh and Bogatsuru Marsh, where visitors can observe unique ecosystems and diverse wildlife.

Makinoto Pass serves as a popular starting point for hikers exploring the Kuju Mountains.

From Beppu:

  • About 2 hours by Kyushu Oudan Bus (Kyushu Sanko) to Makinoto Pass or Kuju Trailhead
  • Fare: About 2,500 yen

From Kumamoto:

  • About 3 hours by Kyushu Oudan Bus (Kyushu Sanko) to Makinoto Pass or Kuju Trailhead
  • Fare: About 3,500 yen

From Yufuin (Weekends and holidays from April to November only):

  • About 80 minutes by Kamenoi Bus to Makinoto Pass
  • Fare: 1,350 yen

From Fukuoka:

  • About 2 hours by JR Kyudai Line Limited Express to Bungo-Nakamura Station
  • Then about 40 minutes by community bus from Bungo-Nakamura Station to Kuju Trailhead (Chojabaru)

By Car

  • From Kumamoto: About 2 hours
  • From Beppu: About 75 minutes
  • Main trailheads are at Makinoto Pass or Chojabaru Visitor Center along the Yamanami Highway

The Kuju Mountains are part of Aso-Kuju National Park and include the highest peak in Kyushu. They offer well-maintained hiking trails and spectacular views of volcanic landscapes.
