Usa Shrine

Usa Shrine (宇佐神宮), also known as Usa Jingu, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Usa in Oita Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is known for its beautiful architecture, historic significance, and spiritual importance, making it a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike.

According to shrine tradition, Usa Shrine was founded in 725 and is dedicated to Hachiman-Okami, a deity comprised of three gods: Emperor Ojin, Hime Okami, and Empress Jingu. It is revered as a deity of war, archery, victory, protection, fortune, and protection from misfortune. The shrine was once considered one of the most important shrines in Japan and played a key role in the country’s history.

One of the main attractions of Usa Shrine is its beautiful architecture, featuring a mix of traditional Japanese and Chinese styles. The main hall of the shrine, rebuilt in the 19th century, is the only National Treasure among all Hachiman shrines in Japan. It is particularly impressive, with its unique Hachiman-zukuri architectural style and intricate wood carvings. The shrine also houses many other Important Cultural Properties, such as the Chokushimon gate and the Kurehashi bridge.

Usa Shrine is divided into an upper shrine and a lower shrine. The upper shrine enshrines Hachiman Okami (Emperor Ojin), Hime Okami, and Empress Jingu, while the lower shrine enshrines the spirit of Emperor Ojin. The shrine also features a sacred tree called “Meoto Ishi” (husband and wife stones), which is approximately 800 years old.

Usa Shrine is also an important spiritual site and is believed to have the power to grant wishes and bring good fortune. Many pilgrims come to the shrine to pray for success in business, good health, protection from misfortune, and other blessings.
