
Usuki (臼杵) is a city located in Oita Prefecture, Japan, situated on the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu. The city has a population of approximately 36,000 people as of May 2023. Usuki is known for its well-preserved historic district, featuring traditional Japanese buildings and streetscapes, reminiscent of its past as a castle town.
Usuki is famous for its stone Buddhas, known as Usuki Sekibutsu (臼杵石仏), which are scattered throughout the area. These rock-carved statues, dating back to the late Heian period (12th century), are designated as a National Treasure and offer a glimpse into Japan’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Additionally, Usuki is a popular destination for hot springs and outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling, due to its location near the Kunisaki Peninsula. The city is also known for its delicious fugu (pufferfish) cuisine, especially during the winter months.
