The Usuki Stone Buddhas (臼杵石仏) are a group of Buddhist stone statues carved into a cliff about 5km southwest of the center of Usuki City in Oita Prefecture, Japan. These statues are considered one of the most important collections of Buddhist stone carvings in Japan, dating back to the late Heian period (794-1185) and early Kamakura period (1185-1333).
There are a total of 60 stone Buddhas in Usuki, divided into four groups: the Hokki Stone Buddhas Group 1, the Hokki Stone Buddhas Group 2, the Sannoyama Stone Buddhas, and the Furuzono Stone Buddhas. Each group has a different theme, and the statues vary in size, each with unique expressions and poses.
The Usuki Stone Buddhas are a popular tourist attraction in Japan and are designated as a National Treasure, making them the only stone cliff carvings in Japan to receive this prestigious status. They are considered a valuable cultural heritage site.
