Kerama Islands

Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands (慶良間諸島) are a group of small islands located in the Pacific Ocean, about 40 kilometers west of Okinawa Island, Japan. The islands are known for their stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine life, making them a popular destination for snorkeling and diving.

The largest island in the Kerama group is Tokashiki Island, which is home to several beautiful beaches, including Aharen Beach, often referred to as the “most beautiful beach in the Orient” for its pristine white sand. The island also has several hiking trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding ocean and islands.

Another popular island in the group is Zamami Island, which is known for its clear waters and abundance of sea turtles. The island is home to several beaches, including Ama Beach, which is a popular spot for snorkeling and swimming.

The Kerama Islands are part of the Kerama Islands National Park, which was established in 2013 to protect the islands’ unique natural environment. The park, which includes the islands and surrounding waters, covers an area of 3,500 hectares of land and more than 9,000 hectares of sea.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Kerama Islands also have a rich cultural heritage, with a history dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era. The islands have a unique dialect and traditional music and dance, which are distinct from those found on the main islands of Japan.
