Nestled deep in the tranquil forests of northern Okinawa Island, Hiji Waterfall (比地大滝) quietly conceals its majestic presence. Located in Kunigami Village, this waterfall boasts the largest drop on Okinawa Island at approximately 26 meters, greeting visitors with an awe-inspiring display of natural power.
The journey to Hiji Waterfall is an adventure in itself. Starting from the Hiji Waterfall Campground, a well-maintained hiking trail stretches about 1.5 kilometers, taking roughly 40 minutes to trek. Along the way, a red suspension bridge offers breathtaking views of the Hiji River, creating moments of excitement and wonder. This bridge, suspended 17 meters above the ground, provides a stunning vantage point of the lush green ravine below.
The trail, surrounded by the rich subtropical forests of Yanbaru, promises encounters with diverse flora and fauna. Northern Okinawa’s wildlife is more abundant and varied than in the south, offering hikers the chance to observe various birds, turtles, snakes, and lizards. With luck, you might even spot some rare bird species.
While the trail is well-maintained, much of it is uphill with some steep sections. Wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes is highly recommended. Rest areas and toilets are available along the route, and it’s crucial to stay hydrated.
Upon reaching the waterfall, you’re greeted by a magnificent sight: water emerges from the forest, cascading forcefully down 26 meters of rock face into the pool below. This spectacular view serves as a rewarding finale to the long journey.
Hiji Waterfall is a precious spot to experience Okinawa’s rich natural beauty. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, enveloped in air rich with negative ions, it continues to captivate many tourists as a place for both physical and mental refreshment.
