Yanbaru Region

Yanbaru National Park

The Yanbaru region (やんばる) is located in the northern part of Okinawa Island, which is the largest island in the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan. Yanbaru is known for its lush subtropical evergreen forests, rivers, and diverse wildlife, including the endangered Okinawa Rail bird, which is endemic to northern Okinawa Island, and the Yanbaru Long-armed Cricket.

The region is also home to the Yanbaru National Park, which covers about 18% of Okinawa Island and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park features hiking trails that lead through dense forests and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Yanbaru region is known for its unique culture, which has been shaped by the Ryukyu Kingdom and the island’s isolation from the rest of Japan. The region is home to a number of traditional festivals and events, including the Yanbaru Kuina Festival, which celebrates the local culture and showcases traditional music, dance, and crafts.

The Yanbaru region is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventurers who want to explore the natural wonders of Okinawa Island and experience the island’s unique culture and history.
